2024 BSD Trainees’ Sessions

I hope you’ve had a good start to the new year.

I’m delighted to commence the 2024 BSD Trainee series with sessions from two excellent speakers:

Thursday 29 February 12.30pm – Dr Arti Bakshi (Consultant Dermatopathologist, Liverpool Clinical Laboratories and Secretary of the BSD) will lead our first slide review session. See below for Case details/slides for review and Zoom link.

Thursday 14 March – Tropical Dermatopathology – Dr S Attili, Visakha Institute of Skin and Allergy, India.

April 2024 – Case reviews – Dr S Elsheikh, Nottingham University Hospitals, UK 

July 2024 – Approach to hair follicular tumours – Dr A Bakshi, Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, UK

Thursday 29 February 12.30pm – Dr Arti Bakshi

The next session in the BSD trainees’ series programme will take place on 29th February at 12.30pm and will be led by Dr Arti Bakshi, Consultant Dermatopathologist at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories and Secretary of the BSD.

Dr Bakshi will discuss the following cases:
Case 1: 76/F, widespread rash seen as erosions with scabbing all over trunk, chest, upper back and abdomen. Patient described blistering rash, but no blisters seen on examination. Possible history of insect bite some weeks back. One of the lesions on forehead was sore and itchy for which clarithromycin was prescribed some days prior to widespread rash appearing. ? Drug reaction ? insect bite ?bullous pemphigoid
Case 2: 75/M, new onset itchy rash restricted to back. Follicular papules and few urticated lesions ?eosinophilic folliculitis
Case 3: 53/F, progressive erythematous pustular rash submammary area, axilla and back of legs. Patient on several long standing medications for hypertension and diabetes. No previous skin disease.
Case 4: 31/M, papules and pustules around the nose, under the eyes and medial eyebrows ?sarcoid
Case 5: 58/F, unusual rash ?sarcoid ?drug rash

Thursday 1st February 1pm – Dr Melanie Page

Dr Page is a Consultant Dermatologist / Moh’s surgeon at the Northern Care Alliance) will speak on “Moh’s surgery for the uninitiated” – this will be a fantastic opportunity to learn from an experienced Moh’s surgeon about this vital surgical technique in modern dermatology and how it relates to dermatopathology reporting.

 


Trainee Educational Series – Dr Nitin Khirwadkar – 9th November 2023 1pm

Hi everyone,

 I’m delighted to be able to announce that our next talk in the BSD Educational Series for Trainees will be taking place on Thursday 9th November at 1pm GMT/UTC. It will be taken by Dr Nitin Khirwadkar, a very experienced dermatopathologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Treasurer of the BSD, so we are very exceptionally grateful that he has agreed to take this session. Dr Khirwadkar has decided to share with us 4 of his own cases, which can be found below along with the clinical background.

I have decided to experiment using Google Meet for this meeting. It allows up to 100 participants – so make sure you get your spot!

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a great summer.

 I’m delighted to be able to announce that our next talk in the BSD Educational Series for Trainees will be taking place on Thursday 28 September at 1pm BST. It will be taken by Dr William Merchant, a highly experienced dermatopathologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, so we are very fortunate that he has agreed to give up his time for this event. Dr Merchant has chosen a selection of his own cases to share with us for this session.

 Just to add that I will stepping down from this post in October, so this is likely the last session that I will be Chairing, and I hope that someone will be appointed in my stead to take over the reins shortly. BSD Live Trainee Zoom Tutorials

Hello everyone!

We are delighted to announce that Dr Cynthia Heffron, Consultant Dermatopathologist, will be giving the next talk in the BSD Educational Series for Trainees, on Thursday 12 January at 1pm. She will be our first international speaker, based at Cork University Hospital in Ireland.  Dr Heffron is a very experienced dermatopathologist and is widely published, so we feel very lucky that she is giving up her time to provide us this educational session.

Dr Heffron has chosen three cases from the teaching set provided by Dr Sara Edward’s from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (cases can be viewed beforehand using links below) and is going to be taking us through a case of her own that she would like to share on her microscope.

I am thrilled to announce that the next talk in the BSD Educational Series for Dermatology and Histopathology Trainees is taking place on Wednesday 14th June at 1pm (BST) and is to be taken by Dr Asok Biswas from Western General Hospital and the University of Edinburgh. Dr Biswas is an experienced dermatopathologist with specialist interests in inflammatory skin disorders and adnexal tumours, and so we are incredibly fortunate that he has agreed to take this session.
